Contact is a narrative work loosely based on the plot line to the Carl Sagan novel of the same name, which tells the story of an astronomer who makes contact with aliens by means of decoding a message overhead through radio waves. A large aspect of the work is built around chance operation, as it involves the use of multiple radios being played and re-tuned in real time (in addition to sampling). The story is told in three main sections: the first has us listen to radio signals, and try to pick out the coded message that emerges as part of the texture. Next, the sampling becomes increasingly rhythmic, which represents the decoding stage and the subsequent building of a transportation machine. This second section is broken by a quick pause, which launches us into a chaotic journey into space. Gradually, this chaos evolves into a series of drones, meant to symbolize our “oneness” with the universe and with each other. This was the first piece I wrote for LAEE right when we formed in 2018, and allowed me to explore some of the possibilities of what we could do as a chamber group.
