Sometimes you make a patch because it feels like a fun idea. The patch for Letters is first and foremost a qwerty keyboard sampler, and my first thought in building it was that a user could keybind a recording of themselves speaking each letter of the alphabet as it appears on the keyboard. And that was all it was for many years, just a fun idea that I thought would be fun to build. And when I eventually showed it to the group, they also thought it could be a fun idea. So we played around with it, added pieces to what kinds of sounds it could make, I eventually added improv rules to give ourselves some structure (we had fun jamming for 10-20 minutes at a time, but it’s hard to say how fun that would be to listen to). I like this piece because it feels very explicit in making the laptop (and the person at it) the instrument, and that it’s fun to play with my friends.
