about

Slough was written at the end of my tenure at CSULB, when the music program’s laptop ensemble had doubled in size. So, I was thinking about a piece that was arrangeable up to forces of 12. I think I had just seen the orchestra do Kindertotenlieder, and the idea of such large forces operating as accompaniment to voice was so appealing.
There were these killer players in the ensemble. Tim Cummins who is an amazing jazz musician was playing bari sax and I was playing a bit of tenor at the time. We also had two great singers, Rebecca Stewart and Gemma Castro which led to this idea of having antiphonal acoustic elements and then a central mass of sound from the electronics. The CSULB ensemble never did perform it unfortunately.
A good friend, Juliet Johnson provided the text for this piece, so I’ve always felt obligated to get it performed — if not for the sake of the piece, for the sake of the beautiful text that I had offered a home, but never provided. It feels good to have finally found a way that this piece can exist, when it took so many people to make it happen, even including those that don’t know they made it happen.
