about

We Study is an arrangement of a previously performed work. I think doing these arrangements of older pieces has really helped us hone in on the ideas that we’re looking at, because it provides a point of comparison. The initial ensemble was composed of me and Cristina both on electronics with Lucy McKnight on the cello, and maybe even more importantly than the size and personnel difference, we were accompanying live dance.
The dance, a trio choreographed by Madison Clark, was an exploration of bodies in space and the groupings that bodies can form. This heavily informed the composition, thinking about the ways that very desperate instruments can occupy and coexist in the same sonic space, and the ways that they can pass from foreground to background as groups and individually. Standing alone with no dance, some extra formal structure had to be put in place, we added another member, and then swapped from cello to electric guitar. This invited more diversity in our sonic palate, and complicated the issue of instruments representing sonic bodies to be pushed about an acoustic space.
We had been performing with Marcus’s guitar run through a circuit bent digital delay pedal, where the clock speed on the processor had been overridden with noise, making it interestingly glitchy, and whereas my synth patch had been documented, Glen played something different every single time we performed this piece. The instability these elements provided lets the piece breathe a bit when we play it live, and helped to put the focus on the conceptual gesture, and let the sonic landscape be a byproduct of the specific mode of work that We Study has provided us.
